This is your worst nightmare ! Palinda3

I have read numerous accounts on here as to why Palin should not be your worst nightmare...

But they are wrong.

Palin does not take experience off the table. Here is why...

1. She has executive experience. Obama has none.

2. She ran a city of the same size as Obama's State Senatorial District. She reformed it's government successfully and was well liked in the process.

3. She has a track record of reform in Alaska as Governor. She has tangible accomplishments at making change happen. Obama has none.

Being a Senator is quite different that being an executive. Biden nor Obama have ever actually "run" anything. At least McCain commanded a decorated, large Navy Squadron where he also reformed it from a low-performer to THE top performer.

Palin also ensures that Obama will not win the female vote. Palin is earthy, connects with people and has done difficult job while raising 3 kids.

If you call her out of touch, you lose credibility, while offending every mother out there.

She will pull in the disaffected Hillary waverers in droves.

She also blunts Obama's bounce and the desire to get on the bandwagon of history. Now McCain has a nice historical bandwagon to latch onto as well.

They will introduce her as the "Next Next" President of the United States, as if to suggest a vote for her now, is a vote for her in 4-8 years.

She is not your typical Republican, and the GOP needs to send a message that they are reinventing themselves but with the same core values around individual initiative rather that collective initiative, less government that delivers more, and low taxes and strong economic investment.

She is a pargmatic reformer, like McCain. She cracks heads and gets things done.

This is how she will be presented, and it will be compelling.

Obama's speech is no longer today's headline. It is all about Palin.

This is not checkmate, but Obama has been checked.

He gave a great speech, but it had enough problems in terms of new politics vs. old politics contradictions, promising the world without showing HOW you can deliver, and then the Hollywood aspect of it did nothing to reduce his self-aggrandizing persona.

Obama's speech delivered Hope, but in the context of tearing America down and pointing fingers everywhere but at his party, by telling us that things are so incredibly bad, yet 70% of people believe their personal financial picture is improving.

Populist Pessimism always gets trumped by Patriotic Optimism...every time. Americans are, by nature, optimists.

Palin is an optimistic figure. She will fit nicely with the narrative that will shape McCain, which is as a fighter, who has gotten kicked in the teeth, but gets back up.

They will say McCain got kicked in the teeth in the primaries, carried his own bags while campaigning, and got back up.

They will say that America got kicked in the teeth in 1980, but with the help of Ronald Reagan got back up.

They will say that America got kicked in the teeth on 9/11, but got back up.

They will say America got kicked in the teeth in Iraq, but got back up.

They will say America got kicked in the teeth with the housing crisis, but is getting back up.

They will say that Barack Obama, in his acceptance speech kicked John McCain in the teeth, and he is still standing.

...and Sarah Palin and her salt of the earth family with traditional values will embody how and why we always get back up.

Heavy stuff...this is your worst nightmare.

Here's local reaction to John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee.

Republican state Attorney General McKenna: "It's an unexpected and brilliant choice. He needed to choose someone who would rally the base. This clearly does that, but she also has tremendous crossover appeal, obviously to women.

"The pundits are already saying now McCain can't criticize Barack (Obama) for not having enough experience. Well, Palin is not running for president. She's running for vice president. She gets the experience she needs while she's vice president."

Tony Benegas, 47, West Richland, a city councilman and a delegate to the national Republican convention: "What an awesome pick. She's just an incredible person. Very conservative. Extremely pro-life. I'm just awe-struck. I can't think of a better choice. She's a gorgeous lady first of all. Five kids. Talk about shattering the glass ceiling ... Here's someone I can wholeheartedly support."

Laura Cheney, 63, White Salmon, Klickitat County, homemaker and a delegate to the national Republican convention: "I think it will excite the base. She's an accomplished woman and I think she has heart. ... I think the fact she's on the ticket gives women a feeling that they are more empowered. I think women figure women always listen better than men to women's issues. So I think it could be a real benefit."

State Republican Party Chairman Luke Esser: "We're offering a Western ticket to the people of the country this year. Plus Sarah Palin has the ability to appeal to a lot of those who supported Hilary Clinton's historic candidacy. She has a tradition of shaking up the status quo. She's another maverick that goes along well with Sen. McCain."

Matthew Lundh, 23, Seattle, who works for the King County Republican Party and is an alternate to the national Republican convention: "I couldn't be more pleased. He made a good choice picking someone who is an up-and-comer in the party. She has fought for ethics reform and fought against some of the corrupt machine in Alaska. I've followed her career since she became governor in Alaska. She was my dark horse. I was really hoping that she'd be the one."

Dino Rossi, Republican candidate for governor: "I think it's a perfect fit for John McCain. I flew up and did a fundraiser for her in 2006. I was very impressed with her. The conservatives will be happy. She's bright and articulate ... America is just going to have to get to know her."

Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Spokane, Co-Chair of the Congressional Women's Caucus: "This is a bold and exciting pick that demonstrates the Republican Party is focused on the future and changing how Washington, D.C., does business. As an outsider, Governor Palin has a solid record of making government work better, including fighting for landmark ethics reform — she will bring that same focus to Washington, D.C."

AUGUSTA, Maine—Maine Republicans on Friday offered universal praise for John McCain's selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate and the first woman to appear on the GOP ticket.

Sen. Olympia Snowe said McCain's choice demonstrates "his willingness and commitment to push boundaries and transform America."

"It is an outstanding choice that will resonate with voters in Maine and throughout America, as she will further bring an outside-the-beltway, reform-minded approach to the White House with a John McCain presidency," Snowe said Friday.

Sen. Susan Collins said that as a woman, a wife and a mother of five, Palin "would bring a unique perspective to the office."

"I am not surprised that for his choice John McCain looked outside of Washington for an executive with a proven record of challenging the status quo," Collins said in a statement from Blue Hill, where she's on a bus tour in her re-election campaign.

Palin has earned a reputation for bucking her party's establishment and Alaska's powerful oil industry. In 2006, she won a primary victory over incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski, who served 22 years in the U.S. Senate before winning the governor's seat in 2002.

Maine House Republican Leader Josh Tardy described Palin as "independent-minded, maverick-type leader."

Democrats were less enthused.

Gov. John Baldacci, who was en route home from the Democratic National Convention in Denver, questioned whether Palin has the experience to serve as president. Democratic nominee Barack Obama chose as his running mate Joseph Biden, a senator since 1973 and a foreign policy expert.

"I think the question probably would be, given Senator McCain's years and the factor in terms of her experience, is she going to be able to take over to be the president of the United States? That would be a question," Baldacci said from LaGuardia Airport.

State Republican Party Chairman Mark Ellis was in Minneapolis at a GOP meeting in advance of next week's convention when Friday's announcement was made. The group of more than 100 GOP leaders stopped the meeting to watch the announcement live on television.

"She's an exciting and historic choice," said Ellis, who downplayed questions about Palin's level of experience. "Actually, I think our vice presidential candidate has more executive experience than the democratic presidential nominee."

Snowe made note of the fact that Palin is the first Republican woman tapped for national office.

"The time has long since come for a woman to be the vice presidential nominee on the Republican ticket, and I congratulate John McCain for breaking this political glass ceiling on behalf of millions of American women in the 21st century," she said.

The Barack Obama convention bounce appeared to be building quite nicely, already a solid 8 pts, according to Gallup's latest tracking poll, and then...

The final bounce, of course, wouldn't be expected to be seen for a couple days, until the numbers come in from polls conducted today. You'd expect a couple more points...

But then, there's the announcement. A shocker, really. I'm listening to the chattering class note that she was on the radar screen, but they're clearly lying.

And in the Obama camp, there have to be concerns about how the choice of Sarah Palin (btw, on Prime Buzz, she just lost her Gov. title, just as the others have lost their Sen. tags. They're all candidates now, and frankly, if you don't know their backgrounds to that extent, well, you aren't on here in the first place) will affect both the final bounce numbers and the dynamic of the race.

True, Obama's is still an historic quest. But now, so is McCain's. If Obama went for vanilla, stability, reliability with Joe Biden,

McCain lobbed a Hail Mary with Palin. Most Hail Mary's, it must be said, fail. But when they connect, they're game changers.

As it stands, John McCain is at 41 percent, Obama 49 percent. It's the biggest poll lead Obama has had in about a month.

But will it get bounced a couple points higher, or will the Palin pick blunt that? Palin has downsides, clearly. First, she's not particularly well known, she has limited experience and, well, to state it again, she's from Alaska.

But she is one heck of a story, and she looks sharp enough thus far. In any case, as one pundit in the office (okay, Steve Kraske) noted as she was being introduced, in a loud, excited voice, "This is a great race. You can't buy fun like this."

At the very least, buckle up. It's gonna be a bumpy ride to November.

In picking an unknown, untested, half-a-term woman governor from Alaska to be his running mate, John McCain is following in a long line of reckless men who have rolled the dice for a beauty queen. Except in this case, McCain is taking one of the biggest, boldest gambles in modern American political history.

He's betting his presidency on a naked political play for holdout Hillary supporters and other female swing voters - and hoping that a large share of these predominantly pro-choice women will ignore or overlook Palin's staunch pro-life, anti-stem cell views.

But that's just the better half of it. McCain will now have to pull off a grand slam of cognitive dissonance - trying to discredit Barack Obama as unready to be Commander in Chief while trying to pawn off the least qualified candidate put on a national ticket in our lifetime as the second best choice to lead the most powerful nation in the world.

COUNTERPOINT: PALIN WAS GOOD CHOICE FOR WOMEN

As a political professional, I have to admire McCain's guts in making such an unconventional pick and taking such an inordinate risk. It shows if nothing else that McCain did not permanently sublimate his maverick streak in his sad, cynical drift to the right over the past eight years.

In the best case scenario, it could help reinforce McCain's appeal to and shore up his credibility with the independents who first fell hard for him in 2000 - and who may be feeling a little less loving after Obama pounds home this fall all the ways McCain has flip-flopped and Bush-kissed in trying to win the Republican nomination.

At a minimum, it signals that McCain is not going to cede the anti-Washington turf to Obama and plans on doing what he can to neutralize if not outright steal Obama's change message. Indeed, Palin's greatest selling point, much like Obama, is that she just doesn't look or sound like your typical politician, let alone your typical Republican.

If McCain is going to stake his fall campaign on a positive reform agenda, which he would be wise to do, Palin could be the most effective candidate of all the VP options McCain was considering to carry that message. She is a reformer with some results - and without the various political baggage that Ridge, Lieberman and Romney were all bogged down with.

But while it's plausible that Palin could prove a fresh-faced asset, the odds are that she will turn out to be a noticeable liability for McCain - if not an outright disaster. Running mates typically have little to no impact on voter decisions, but when they do, they tend to be negative. And Palin has the potential to hurt McCain in multiple ways.

First, there is a fair chance that Palin, who just two years ago was the mayor of a town of 8,500 people, will crack under the immense pressure of the national campaign meat-grinder and become a source of serial and damaging gaffes - which will put the McCain campaign on the defensive when they can least afford it.

Sure, she looked composed at the unveiling - but wait a couple of weeks. Most Americans have no idea how challenging it is even for the most experienced politicians to sound coherent, let alone presidential, while criss-crossing the country and talking non-stop 15 hours a day. Just ask Wes Clark - a few days into his first foray into presidential politics in 2003, the former NATO Supreme Allied
Commander was crying out to be rescued by his press secretary during a round of press interviews.

Second, there is a fair chance that the Palin pick will backfire with the very women McCain needs to court to win, and not just because of the abortion politics. I suspect that many of the holdout Hillary voters will see the unaccomplished Palin as not worthy of carrying their candidate's pantsuit - and an even greater insult to their cause than Obama's audacity was in the primaries.

Third, and most consequentially, whatever points McCain scores with independents for picking an outside-the-box outsider will most likely be squandered and trumped by the hits he takes to his integrity for making such a hypocritical choice.

Every time McCain and his surrogates attack Obama's inexperience, watch Joe Biden eviscerate McCain's best argument by throwing Palin straight back in Mr. Straight Talk's face (that's not counting the VP debate, which will make Bentsen-Quayle look like a fair fight). In the process, the Obama campaign will minimize their greatest vulnerability and erode one of McCain's greatest strengths.

Just ask yourself: Is it really putting your country first to put Sarah Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency?

About last night

by Geo Beach

Yesterday on the eve of Barack Obama’s official nomination, John McCain sent what the New York Times called “a Valentine” campaign ad to Barack. Today McCain has pulled off the biggest coup of the election season with his selection of Alaska Gov Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Um, about last night — this morning’s announcement was Cupid’s arrow shot through that heart.

McCain gets a running mate who is young (diminishing the perceived negative of his age), female (snookering Obama for Hillary’s hold-outs), executive (to his legislative) and most important, both by her deserved reputation and by the impact of the choice itself, re-establishes McCain’s eroded credentials as a genuine maverick candidate. That appeals to the middle voters who will decide the election.

Plus, McCain’s choice of Palin achieves what McCain himself can never do — it took the words right out of Obama’s mouth.

The acceptance speech that was so essential to Obama has been filed in the dusty back drawers of political history, as if the text had never been given voice. Media are addicted to the new and the now, and now the Labor Day Weekend will be all I Dream Of Sarah and no echoes of I Had A Dream. Magic.

Forget political analysts — they were wrong again, saying that veep selections don’t make electoral difference.

Obama, agent of change, picks an old white senator who failed at presidential politics twenty years ago. McCain, an old white senator who failed at presidential politics eight years, picks a fresh, pro-life, NRA-packing governor from the wild West. Maverick.

And Mom. Who’s changing politics today?

Obama’s campaign had originally even targeted Alaska — which hasn’t gone Dem in a presidential election since ‘76 — as a potential swing state. Their figuring was based on the iconoclastic nature of this state’s electorate. But the cross-over mentality Obama’s campaign identified will cut the other way now, with many Democrats here going to Sarah. There’s no longer a left wing or a prayer for Alaska going blue.

Obama missed his best chance for the presidency when he skipped Janet Napolitano, governor of Arizona, as running mate. She would have brought gender, executive experience, and Western states credibility to the ticket. Not only is she a former attorney general, something that would have enhanced the ticket’s centrist appeal, she’s been elected in John McCain’s home state — and re-elected.

Red, right, return – the mariner’s mantra home to safe harbor.

Any way you play the political checker-board, Janet jumps Joe Biden — and McCain plus whoever. If Obama had named Napolitano, it would have been just a few moves to “King Me”.

Instead, we have guaranteed change at the highest level of government — courtesy of John McCain. Not just maybe a black president, but for certain either a woman or person of color at the top of the executive branch.

But there’s another first. The 2008 election will put either a Hawaiian or an Alaskan at the pinnacles of Washington DC fifty years after statehood for the 49th and 50th states.

Don’t forget to forget political analysts.

Cokie Roberts recently dismissed Barack Obama because he vacationed in his home state of Hawaii, which Roberts called “some sort of foreign, exotic place”. Cokie thought Barack should have been in Myrtle Beach. That’s as ridiculous as ridiculing Barack as a weird name when we have a Cokie on ABC’s This Week.

Memo to Mrs Roberts — Hawaii isn’t foreign. It’s been American territory since 1898.

Cokie should know better. Her father, Hale Boggs, was killed in that other discontiguous state when he was campaigning for Rep Nick Begich’s reelection in 1972.

In Alaska.

Now, in another display of dynastic politics, Nick’s son Mark is running to take out Sen Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in the history of the US Senate. It’s a central race in this year’s national political landscape.

So don’t make Cokie’s mistake. Alaska’s neither exotic (no palm trees – some places no trees at all!) nor foreign (it’s been American for 141 years). And it’s no longer off the upper left-hand corner of American consciousness.

With Sarah Palin on John McCain’s ticket, Alaska isn’t just hot. It’s right in the middle of America.

Good Morning!

Men ki jan Repiblikain yo panseDivide and conquer: McCain's plan to wrest Clintonion women from Obama?

From Wikileaks

Wednesday May 27, 2008
JULIAN ASSANGE (Investigative Editor)
Is this leaked document, allegedly sent to a McCain campaign team group, the real deal?

MEMORANDUM

To: *******
From: S. Schmidt
Date: May 15, 2008
Subject: Clinton Strategy

According to both internal polling and exit polls by independent news
organizations, the Democratic Party is becoming increasingly polarized along
certain segments of its base. The recent result in West Virginia, while generally
unsurprising and definitely unlikely to cause any real shift in the race,
highlights the growing bitterness between certain supporters of Clinton and
the Obama camp in general. This unique situation has created an opening that
could help depress the turnout of key Democratic demographics in November.
The specific group we are targeting is a cross-section of white, female voters
over the age of 40. Internal polling reveals that this group is the most likely to
support John McCain after Obama wins the nomination. However, we expect
Obama’s numbers to improve following Clinton’s drop. Our job is to make sure
that number stays as low as possible.

Our limited financial resources and the media’s attention on the Democratic
race, however, prevent us from reaching this group. Our aim is to point out
specific issues that we believe resonate well:

1. Sen. Obama’s connection to Rev. Wright
2. His inexperience
3. His links to the corrupt Chicago political machine

However, we cannot fully achieve this goal without a greater commitment on
the part of McCain’s fundraisers and our various media partners. In lieu of
that, we have developed a number of inexpensive ways to reach this audience.
We have already worked to reinforce the Clinton campaign’s narrative about
the unfair treatment that some networks, specifically MSNBC, have given her
camp. We are also planning to unroll a new campaign to highlight Obama’s
experience deficit.

Simultaneously, our team has been testing new lines of attack through
independent pro-Clinton communities on the Internet. Our hope is that our
message here will spread by word-of-mouth. Our local community organizing
has also been successful. We have organized dozens of “meet-ups” across the
country for Clinton supporters, and we have used that time to stress the
importance of punishing the DNC for choosing the undemocratically selected
far-left Obama. At the moment, this is nothing more than a headache for the
Obama campaign. With a greater commitment on your part, I hope to see it
metastasize into something much more.

Let me know if you need more detail.
-S

Wikileaks received the document from an anonymous source last week. Interestingly it has not appeared anywhere else.
"S. Schmidt" is possibly Steven Schmidt, McCain's senior
campaign advisor. The document outlines a strategy designed increase
rivalry between followers of the Democratic Party candidates Hillary
Clinton and Barack Obama. The "meet-ups" mentioned are "grassroots"
in-person get-togethers arranged using "meetup.com" (see http://hrclinton.meetup.com/ for Clinton).
On May 27 (prior to publication) Wikileaks gave the McCain
campaign team a copy of document. After some delay, campaign spokesman
Jeff Sadosky denied the document's authenticity, but would not be drawn
into additional detail.
Is the memo what it purports to be?
No:

  • Denied by McCain spokesperson Jeff Sadosky.
  • Election campaigns have a history of producing some fabricated leaks.
  • Motive is present. The memo's dissemination would benefit Obama at the expense of Clinton and McCain.
  • Sometimes injudicious or fairly informal language.

Yes:

  • Election campaigns have a history of producing many more true leaks than fabricated ones.
  • Campaign committees have a history of denying true leaked memos.
  • The memo is highly critical of Obama, but only Obama's campaign stands to benefit from a fabrication.
  • Election campaigns are long, fast moving and stressful. There
is a history of injudicious memos having been written during election
    campaigns.
  • Informal language is frequently used within a campaign
group. Campaign groups tend to become very close, united by their
    common purpose.
  • If one was motivated to produce a fabrication, then a politically far stronger fabrication could have been produced.
  • Despite Wikileaks
sitting on the document for several days while waiting for comment from
the McCain team, the memo did not appear anywhere elsewhere on the
internet or in the press. Nor did the McCain spokesperson mention that
    they had seen it before.
  • Genuine sources want protection, but campaign fabricators
want maximal dissemination, so why hasn't the document been
    disseminated elsewhere?
  • In my experience, election fabrications are an act of
desperation i.e when the author's political party is in a difficult
position. This certainly isn't true of the Obama campaign which is the
only major group to benefit from the leak.

If the document is fabricated, then the people and methods behind
the frame-up are of substantial interest. Did Obama's team frame
McCain?
If the document is legitimate then it reveals wilful duplicity
on behalf of parts of McCain's campaign and shows that McCain is or was
behind bolstering some aspects of Clinton's campaign.
Regardless, it seems like an effective, even largely forced strategy for McCain.
Let us hope we don't have to wait until the President is sworn in to find out.

Clinton tried that and it didn't work.
Americans want CHANGE and Palin showed that she can deliver it.

The choice of Palin is sheer genius.

Consider:
Maverick Republican, who runs a clean campaign, nets a number of frauds and gets them indicted, and they are all Republican! She should be a pariah in the party - but she is being welcomed because SHE'S the REAL DEAL.
Cleaned up Alaska's budget, and RAISED TAXES on oil companies - she's not beholden.
Worked with businesses to improve trade with Alaska and improve infrastructure.
Has traveled abroad as part of her job.
Has solid conservative creds.
Has solid Green creds (worked with Exxon Valdez Victims' group).
Has more executive experience than Obama, based on political and pre-political work.
Has a BLUE COLLAR background.
Opened up her books, rather than wait for subpoena, when ethics charges were raised. Turned up relatively clean.

Experience is accomplishment, not time spent doing stuff. In that respect, she's light years ahead of Obama. Even if you consider time as the issue, she gets to learn as a VEEP, not the President. It's a winning situation.

Dems are chewing their nails now...Obama's on the ropes and while they may get a bounce, this choice should keep it minimal.

By the way, as far as low IQ's go, I'm 155...Master's in Economics from the New School for Social Research and a Dual BA from Syracuse in Poli Sci and TV Production. Anyone who thinks this is a low IQ choice needs to have their IQ checked again. She's a winner and she's got solid cred the Democrats only HOPE for.

McCain wins 51% of the vote to Obama's 46%. You heard it here first.

Messieurs messieurs les républicains sont excités par cette VP et je les comprend ! J'ai presque envie de retirer ma signature !
