Haiti Elections : Political Maneuvering Money and The Vote

As of recent, the Haitian elite has begun to take hold of the political landscape in hoping to influence and secure the outcome of the upcoming presidential elections in Haiti. Their aim is to preserve the status quo.
This upper-class minority, fearing the return of the populist leaning platform of Fanmi Lavalas, is heavily investing in candidates such as Steve Kawhly of the political party Bouclier, and Jude Celestin who is running under the political party Lapeh.
In spite of these strong financial and political support by this country’s elite, the Lavalas Party has been gaining political momentum. Recent polls by the Sigma Consulting Group has Lavalas Party candidate Dr. Maryse Narcisse leading in the polls. According to Professor Stephen N. Steidleman, with the consulting firm of CST&T, “this gain by Dr. Narcisse in recent poll is tied to former President Aristide’s public endorsement on the anniversary of the military coup in 1991.” He also noted that Narcisse’s consistent presence during the campaign in the populous neighborhoods throughout the country has also helped energize her political base.
That same poll puts Dr. Narcisse at 35% of voters’ intention. If this trend continues, it would give the candidate a place in the presidential runoff.
Sigma is the only consulting firm to have provided a full and detailed report of its polling results. This polling firm is a consortium of European and Cuban trained statisticians which specializes in consumer trends.
According to the former Lavalas Senator Yvon Feuille, “this past month, Fanmi Lavalas's political strategy has been defined as mobilizasyon,” a Haitian creole word which translates into the “go vote and defend your vote.”
As the election campaign is inching closer to October 25th, the national voting day, many candidates in the presidential campaign trail are making their final strategic moves.

.• Dumarsais Mécène Siméus a wellknown Haitian-American businessman has officially endorsed candidate Moise Jean Charles.
• President Michel Martelly is seen promoting his protege Jovnel Moise, a candidate running in this upcoming election.
At the rate political parties are vying to position themselves in this election, the field is narrowing with would-be hopefuls. Should Jean-Bertrand Aristide emerge once again to rally behind his party’s candidate, it may very well secure Narcisse as a front runner.
In the theater of democratic rules in Haiti, “only the people and the elite can be attracted by this political momentum. The elite can pour money but the masses will pour their vote,” said Senator Feuille.
