CARICOM mission to assist Haiti

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, January 30, 2009 -
A Caribbean Community (CARICOM) team is to visit Haiti soon as the 15-member grouping moves to offer more assistance to the country which is still recovering from the devastating effects of the 2008 hurricane season.

The decision was made yesterday, at the 13th Meeting of the CARICOM Council for Finance and Planning (COFAP).

"The meeting agreed to select a team to mount a mission to Haiti as soon as possible to discuss with the Haitian authorities, the manner in which the Community can be of assistance to Haiti in a number of areas following the disastrous hurricanes it has experienced," Secretary General Edwin Carrington told a press conference after the meeting.

"The discussions recognised the absolute benefit to the Community and to Haiti for that kind of collaboration, as there is about virtually every area in which Haiti is in need of Community assistance."

Last year, Haiti was hit by four hurricanes and tropical storms within a month.

CARICOM countries have already rendered financial and material assistance to the country, the poorest in the West Hemisphere. The latest initiative would look at more long-term reconstruction efforts.
