Baby Doc departure details remain murky
Former dictator Jean-Claude (Baby Doc) Duvalier remained in Haiti Friday despite signals a day earlier that he might leave.

Duvalier and his entourage had booked seats on a Thursday morning flight, but missed it.

Instead, Duvalier, who faces a court investigation in Haiti, slipped out the back of his hotel and was driven to a private home on a mountain above the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The reasons for his prolonged stay remain as murky as his motivation for coming back in the first place, but advisers and confidants cite two primary motivations: the lack of a valid passport and the ongoing court investigation against him on allegations of corruption and human rights abuses during his reign.

As his scheduled flight took off he was still in the international-style hotel in Petionville, where he had stayed in a standard room. After a group lunch on its covered patio restaurant his girlfriend, Veronique Roy, walked to a waiting car at the hotel's main door to draw off most of the press while he was shepherded to a separate car behind the compound on a concrete loading dock.

He ended up in a private home, where he was visited by the investigating judge in his court cases, Judge Carves Jean. Haiti's chief prosecutor, Auguste Aristidas, was also among his first visitors there, Radio Metropole reported.

Defence attorney Reynold Georges told reporters earlier in the day that he couldn't speculate how long the ex-dictator would stay in Haiti, but that it would take at least two weeks to resolve the legal cases filed against him.

"He will have to answer that question himself but for now, we're here," Georges said.

Asked if Duvalier had been invited to Haiti by anyone in the government, the attorney said not to his knowledge. "It's his country. He doesn't need an invitation."

Since he is there already ;he should not be allowed to leave.let's finish with this non sense once and for all.Let's him defend his honor against him in front of a tribunal ;If he is found not guilty ;he should stay in his country as any other haitians ;if found guilty he should go to jail as any other delinquant. The same consideration must be given to President Aritide and to any other haitians in exile.

I am urging all 100000 victims of the Duvalier regime to come forward and to bring their accusation against the former President and I am asking the prosecutors to judge them one after and other. We will be there for 15 years of judicial procedure! 10 years to judge Aristide and 25 for the Preval's government. We have the logistics for that, the funds and the specialists. Who cares about the 1000 cases a day of cholera and other pandemies in the pipeline. Let's go, let's judge everybody... We are a rich country these judgments wont have any societal effects! Intelligent fool!

You don't try a president or a politician just for bad decisions unless criminal activities are involved... JCD is still a bum, a sociopath. The non-sense has been the idiosyncratic performance of the Haïtian leadership. What do you mean by ''if he is not found guilty...?'' First, I have noticed that a lot of people are lost and unable to maintain their stand on this matter. As far as I am concerned, any trial should be a formality; you know well where he belongs if he is fit... Because I just watched him again and he still looked frail...

Shit! I cannot believe that I am feeling sorry for that individual because I hate to see ailing people.

I just heard that the State department has warned Préval to conform to the claim of the OEA. So what? Political management?

Bluff! Bull-shit! Anyway, the USA are the pompiers-pyromanes (you like to talk about in other debates). No matter what, people are used to hardships induced by their repetitive embargos. Why did they wait so long? Yeah! The clock is ticking... How clever!

You know what, if we all stepped back, we would understand that the Haïtian leadership might be weak, corrupted but other governments are still taking advantage of the situation...

Go ahead! France, USA, keep sending us (back) your disposable commodities...[u]
