With the Miss Universe pageant coming up in less than a week, Haitienne Magazine is excited to see a new Miss Haiti finally participating after decades with no contestants from Haiti. In 1962, Miss Haiti Evelyn Miot, became the first black women to make it to the top semifinals in the Miss Universe Pageant; and in 1975 Gerthie David, became the second black women to make runner up in the pageant. Haiti has always done well in this pageant and we’re sure our new contestant will do just as well!
This year, Sarodj Bertin, will be representing Ayiti and everything that is beautiful about our culture in a platform that will reach millions of viewers worldwide. In a year that has been devastating to the country this competition is something positive to look forward to amongst the news of devastation and while looking forward to the rebuilding of our country and its political state.
Miss Haiti generously took the time to answer some questions in regards to her preparation and her aspirations for this event.
HM: First, I would like to say congratulations and that Haitienne Magazine is very proud to see you crowned Miss Haiti! How does it feel to be the first contestant from Haiti in the Miss Universe Pageant since 1975?
SB: I feel grateful, it is an honor for me to represent my country, and it is a distinction being the first Miss Haiti, after 35 years, without participating in the Miss Universe Pageant. I deeply believe that my participation in the contest is a big opportunity for my country. It is an opportunity to promote our culture, and it is an opportunity to make the entire world understand what the real Haiti is.
HM: With the pageant in less than 3 weeks, how are you preparing? Do you have a talent that you will showcase during the pageant?
SB: I am preparing myself, since the first day I won the Miss Haiti competition. I have been training in Puerto Rico, with different teachers, and gym trainers. We do not have to present a talent in the contest. So I will inspire all my speeches, and interviews, in the same objective: promote my country, and all the beautiful things that we have in it.
HM: At a time of devastation in our country, Haitians are still very proud and are continuing to work to move forward in rebuilding and with our lives. How do you plan to represent the country and all Haiti stands for during the pageant?
SB: Us Haitians, as always been recognized for are strength, and hope. We fall, but we always stand up. And that is the reason why, we always have to take a step forward. Yes we suffered a big catastrophe this year, but we will stand up, and reconstruct our country.
The international community, after the earthquake, has turned his eyes to Haiti, and has given their aid to the country. Being Miss Haiti, I am an ambassador of my country, and I will be the voice, to explain the needs of my people, so every person that wants to help us can understand what type of help we need.
HM: There is a bit of controversy over the language you will speak at Miss Universe. I understand you speak French, Spanish, Creole and English and that you’re working towards learning Italian and Mandarin. It’s great that you speak so many languages, have you decided if you’re going to speak in Spanish or French/ Creole yet?
SB: The Miss Universe contest is in English. The fact that I speak many languages will obviously help me, because I can explain, and communicate in English, which is there language.
HM: I understand you are wearing a dress from a Haitian designer, can you tell us more about that?
SB: I have dresses, purses, and jewelry from Haitian designers. Some of my dress designers are Viviane Valerius & Maritza Jean Pierre; my purses are from Francoise Elizee, and my jewelry from Rax Collection.
HM: Well, thank you Sarodj for granting us this interview. It was a pleasure and we are all rooting for you! Is there anything else you would like us to know?
SB: Thank you for the interview, I just want {everyone} to remember all the Haitians, that I am not in the Miss Universe pageant just as Sarodj Bertin, I am in the Miss Universe pageant, as Haiti! Representing all the Haitians over the world, and I am working to do my best. I promise to all of you, that I will make you feel proud of me!
The Miss Universe competition will be aired LIVE at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, located at the gorgeous Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Showtime is Monday, August 23rd on NBC and Telemundo at 9 p.m. EST!
