It was a shock, it was painful, it was overwhelming when my friend Kevin told me over the phone about the sudden tragedy that befell his family on Sunday April 15. Mary Skerrett, Kevin’s mother has crossed over the other side of life, without warning. If she was ill, it was unbeknowst to her.

I write this note to say to Mary « mèsi anpil » (thank you) and « respè » (much respect!) for the beautiful time we had the opportunity to share with her since 2004. The paths of our families met, thanks to the great love and passion Mary has always shown for justice and decency in our world.

Mary was a dedicated activist. For world peace, she sang along with the "Raging Grannies". But, for us Haitians, it is for her leadership role within the Canada Haiti Action Network (http://www.canadahaitiaction.ca/) that we know, honour and thank our beautiful sister.

Today, Kevin, his brother Brian, his father Brian, and their network of family and friends should know that their brothers and sisters within the Haitian community will never forget the kind and beautiful raging granny who had so much love in her heart for all people from all places.

A celebration of Mary’s life will take place in Guelph, on Saturday April 28, 2012.
