Santo Domingo.- The Central Electoral Board (JCE) on Monday backed its president Roberto Rosario, whose US visas were cancelled, and asked Washington to explain the unprecedented measure.

In a statement handed to reporters by JCE General Secretary Hilario Espiñeira, the JCE said its members agreed to convey their demand through the Foreign Ministry, because in their view the Board’s image has been significantly affected.

"The JCE expresses concern about the way the measure in a move that could be sent through institutional channels was run, the (US) consul general went, without explanation and diplomatically endorsed information to our building and offices; this procedure, no doubt, was intended to evade providing an explanation to the Dominican State through the channel established in international law: the Foreign Ministry, which in addition has reported that to date it has not been notified," the statement says.

However, they recognize the US government’s right to restrict entry, issue or revoke visas for an individual to enter its territory, since, as a State, has the same right as the Dominican Republic.

US Embassy confirms cancelation


Santo Domingo.- The US State Dept. has canceled the diplomatic visa of Central Electoral Board (JCE) president Roberto Rosario, which was issued in his capacity as a government official and was valid until 2017, as well as ordinary visa stamped on his passport.

Rosario said US Consul General in the country Silvia D. Johnson had requested an appointment, and received her Thursday morning, when the diplomat notified him that his visa had been canceled.

A statement issued by the Electoral Board says the US Consul General was received in Rosario’s JCE office at 2pm today, with another person who identified himself as a US embassy official.

The head of the Electoral Board then presented the diplomatic passport he was carrying at the time to proceed to implement the measure and in the coming hours will do the same with the visa on his ordinary passport.

Rosario said his capacity as a public official obliged him to inform the public of the situation.

Controversial

Rosario’s nationalistic stance before pressure by US ambassador James W. Brewster over the issue of Haitian immigration likely earned him adversaries here and abroad, in addition to broad critique by the local political opposition to his handling of the process that culminated in the May 15 general elections.

“The US Embassy confirmed that the visas of Dr. Roberto Rosario, president of the Central Electoral Board, have been revoked. The State Department has broad authority and reserves the right, under Section 221 (i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, to revoke US visas on the basis of information that comes to light, at any time, influencing a person to be eligible for a visa and travel to the United States,” the US Embassy said in a statement emailed shortly after local media reported the cancelation.
