Dominican boatpeople resorted to cannibalism to stay alive
Santo Domingo.- Some of the 35 boatpeople cast adrift when their yola foundered on the high seas 15 days ago had to eat one of their companions to survive, whereas one woman died, of the five survivors who were hospitalized in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
In a statement the Tourism Ministry yesterday said Francisco Javier Garcia visited the survivors in the hospital and confirmed that they are in good health, although dehydrated and with swollen legs.
The Tourism Ministry said one of the Dominicans in the hospital told Garcia that they watched as 22 of their companions died little by little and that they threw their bodies in the water.
