I have always considered the birth of my daughter here in this country as a privilege because with all its flaws, and all its past mistakes, America has always seemed willing to leap ahead of the pack in terms of all things human.

Agree or disagree as much as you want, there is somethings exceptional about this country, and it is not a coincidence that with its relatively brief existence on earth, it has grown to lead the world; and I think that I may find the secret of that exceptionalism, and it is the following: AMERICANS are culturally optimistic, and therefore see challenges as opportunities for greater things.
