DAJABON, Dominican Republic.- The violence of recent between Dominicans and Haitians took a turn for the worse on Friday, when Haitian nationals stabbed a farmer to death in northern Espaillat province, while Army soldiers shot and injured a citizen from that country during violent protests after Environment Ministry rangers destroyed crops planted in a protected area in Dominican territory near.
The Haitians torched tires at the villages Tirolí and Guayajayuco, blocking the border road which links Dajabón province with the country’s southwest, said Environment official Ana Carrasco.
She said it’s the fourth time the Haitians have been evicted from the protected zone for planting crops in Dominican territory, and destroying the forests.
Timon Claude Salcimé, a Haitian who identified himself as the spokesman of the protesters said the’ll boycott the binational market held Saturdays in Tirolí.
He said they don’t have land to work in his country and crossed into Dominican territory, where they took over abandoned fields to plant crops for their families’ subsistence, adding that the Haitian and Dominican governments should clarify the boundaries, because he was told the area is on the Haitian side.
The debris was removed from the road by Army and Cesfront soldiers, who resisted provocation despite being attacked by the Haitians with machetes and stones.
Haitians arrested for Moca death
Three Haitian nationals attacked with machetes killing Teofilo Antonio Martinez, 55, in his farm located in La Penda, near the community Villa Trina, Municipal District Jose Contreras. The fatal wounds were in different parts of his body, said the Espaillat province Coroner’s Office.
The alleged killers were identified as Yensi Apolinar, arrested in Santiago when he was about to board a bust headed to Dajabón; Carlos Sami, arrested in the La Vega village El Mogote, whereas Jean Batiste is a fugitive.
The Police said theft was the motive of the killers, who reportedly worked in the victim’s farm for several months, and that agents comb the Northern Mountain Range after Haitian who fled.
The tragedy has shocked the people of La Penda and the area’s towns, where Martinez was known as a man of respect in those communities.
