Return Former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to Haiti - Miami Herald Empty Return Former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to Haiti - Miami Herald

Message  jafrikayiti Dim 23 Jan 2011 - 16:33

The Miami Herald ran a full-page statement (Sunday, January 23, 2011) sponsored by the Haiti Action Committee in California, calling for the return of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide from exile in Haiti. The statement is signed by politicians, activists, and other prominent figures, including Dr. Paul Farmer, founder of Partners in Health, Danny Glover, actor and activist, and Reverend Jesse Jackson.

(see full statement, with list of signatories, here: http://canadahaitiaction.ca/content/miami-herald-runs-full-page-statement-calling-return-aristide )

An Urgent Call:
Return Former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to Haiti

In the aftermath of the terrible earthquake that shook Haiti on January 12th, 2010, calls for the return of former President Aristide have been growing louder. Last July 15, 10,000 people took to the streets in Port-au-Prince to commemorate President Aristide’s birthday and call for his return. A broad sector of Haitian grassroots organizations, women’s groups, human rights activists and educators have made it clear that now is the time to end President Aristide’s forced exile in South Africa. A petition circulating among Haitian women gathered well over 20,000 signatures within a few days, calling for the return.

President Aristide has publicly stated that he wishes to return home to Haiti to participate in Haiti’s recovery. President Aristide’s support among Haiti’s poor, who elected him twice as president, and who represent the vast majority of the Haitian population and are those most affected by the recent devastating earthquake, remains strong. There are no legal obstacles to his return; in fact Article 41 of Haiti’s Constitution, declares that “no individual of Haitian nationality can be deported or forced to leave the country for any reason whatsoever,” and Article 41-1 states that “no Haitian needs a visa to leave the country or to return to it.”

Nevertheless, President Aristide remains in exile because the Haitian government, the United States, France, Canada, and the United Nations forces in Haiti have blocked his return. The Haitian government has not responded to President Aristide’s request for the issuance of a passport. U.S. and UN officials have issued public statements opposing his return.

But they do not speak for the people of Haiti. As demonstrations for President Aristide’s return continue in Haiti, as broad sectors of Haitian society echo this call, as the voices of those living in refugee camps across the devastated city of Port-au-Prince and throughout Haiti reach us, we reiterate and support their demand.

We call on the Haitian government to immediately renew President Aristide’s passport as he has requested, and to facilitate his return, without any conditions, to the country of his birth. We call on the international authorities, particularly the United Nations and the United States government, to end their opposition to President Aristide’s return. Justice, humanity and respect for self-determination are at the heart of this issue. All hands are needed in Haiti at this difficult moment.

I don't get it...

Who are Dr. Paul Farmer, Danny Glover, and Jesse Jackson?

Are they citizens of Haiti or United States?

How can they call their group Haiti Action Committee in California?

This is unacceptable....

I don't know any haitian who has done more for the poors in haiti than Dr Paul Farmer;he is more haitian than many of us who are just writing franseeuuuu in this forum. To question the sincerity of Danny Glover is ludicrous.Rev. jesse jackson has spent his life fighting for social justice in the world. These are people who not only talk the talk ,but they also walk the walk.It is time that people who abhor injustice in the world stand -up and fight. We need more solidarity and love among ourselves.people who are lovers of justice, liberty ,fraternity and egality must be more willing to fight when an injustice is done to any of us.If Arsitide is accused of crimes then it behooves to his prosecutors or persecutors to present their cases in front of a tribunal in his country.

What do you mean they are not allowed to write in the name of our people? Are they writing about something that concerns only haitians? Are you more haitian than Dr paul farmer who had contacted tuberculosis in haiti because he wanted to help the poors?Do you know who is Dr Paul Farmer? maybe wou would say that nobody should write about the holocauste because it is an internal problem of the german people if you were living in the 40's.

The more You write the more i doubt about your sincerity in defending the cause of the poors in haiti. What a disappointment.

It is not suffice to open your mouth and say :i am haitian or I am american. You have to be willing to sacrifice your life for that country.as far as i am concerned Dr Farmer is more haitian than many of us myself included. You mean Jean Claude Duvalier is more haitian than Dr Paul Farmer ?,not in my book.Injustice in the world is not a national problem it is a world problem therefore every human being has the right and the duty to fight it whereever it manifests itself.

WOZO;

Some people on this site are leaving in their own little world. One thing ,i would say ,among the personalities who have signed this petition are some who have fought against apartheid in SOUTH AFRICA and forced the REAGAN REACTIONARIES who were cozying up with the BOERS to rectify their attitude.

People like MOLEFI ASSANTE ,HARRY BELAFONTE,JESSE JACKSON etc..

These old warriors are again fighting the good fight

Annou tounen diskisyon an sou sijè an.Nou plede ap repete ke kongrèsmann ameriken nwa yo se BLAK KOKEN.

Mwenmenm mwen di SE MANTI ;okontrè gen lan nèg sa yo ki te konn kontribye lan FONDASYON ARISTIDE POU DEMOKRASI ;yon moun tankou KONGRÈSMAN JOHN CONYERS ki te konn ramase lajan pou fondasyon an e ki te lan ""board"" fondasyon an.

Te gen yon diskisyon sou gè sivil ameriken an ;mwen te vle patisipe ,paske se yon sijè ki pasyone m e ke mwen gen plis ke 40 an m ap li sou li.

Return Former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to Haiti - Miami Herald Empty Re: Return Former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to Haiti - Miami Herald

...While destitute Haiti is one of the world's poorest countries, Aristide has been profligate in spending millions on U.S. lobbyists and lawyers. Powerful American politicians sit on the board of Fusion Telecommunications International, which Aristide granted an exclusive concession over the country's lucrative long-distance market. These favors may partially explain the remarkable forbearance toward the Haitian leftist by American liberals...

...Reports filed with the Justice Department by registered foreign agents reflect spending by the Aristide government of well over a million dollars a year, an astounding amount for such a small country. This money did not produce a concerted sales effort to attract U.S. foreign aid funds, but it did build personal support for Aristide. Black Caucus members have been frequent visitors to Haiti, where they have been entertained lavishly...

...Kennedy also has been listed as a board member of Fusion, which has exclusive access to the flood of telephone calls placed by Haitian residents of the U.S. back to family and friends in Haiti every weekend. Writing in the Boston Globe in 2001, Kennedy said: "I was proud to help bring more than $1 million in private investment from Fusion into Haiti..."
