In Haïti – Haitii? Jean-Bertrand Aristide combines the artistry of Swahili with the poetic incisiveness of his native Kreyol to produce an eloquent, resounding negation to colonialism and slavery, as well as an emphatic affirmation of freedom, liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Aristide writes in poetry, prose, proverbs, and aphorisms to tell the epic story of the life and freedom affirming spirit of Haiti, the world’s first independent Black republic. He chronicles slavery through a recitation of the brutality of the colonisers and the often mundane and trivial ways in which they attempted to dehumanize Haitians, positioning the reader in the place of the human beings who were at the receiving end of such inhumanity. Aristide eloquently illustrates how Haitians 300-year journey to freedom was illuminated by the African philosophy of Ubuntu, a world view that embodies human solidarity, respect, dignity, justice, liberty, and love. In this philosophy, Africans found an unmatched strength to resist slavery. Today, he writes, it is this same philosophy that can empower a new generation of Africans worldwide to resist neo-colonialism.

Rooming in the Master’s House is an analytical narrative of the origins, evolution, and development of a political and cultural sector of the African American community that abandoned the idea of collective liberation for the idea of individual salvation. It is a penetrating examination of the psychological and social disorders of self-negation, self-hatred, and group disdain that have affected the most extreme elements of the black community, especially as seen in those who share identification with the oppressing class more than with the oppressed. Discovering the seeds of this attitude and accompanying behavior in the antebellum period the authors, Asante and Hall, demonstrate that the legacy continues today in the modern day black conservatives who espouse versions of the arguments offered by house Negroes during the enslavement. Using Malcolm X’s notion of a dichotomy between the house Negroes and the field Negroes the authors show how the current black conservative movement is organically linked to this social division.

Before serving as Haiti’s first democratically elected president, Aristide was an ordained Catholic priest. His second term in office was cut short by a coup d’etat that forced him into exile. In 2007, he earned a Doctorate of Literature and Philosophy in African Languages from the University of South Africa. He has recently returned to Haiti from exile in South Africa.

Nous les Africains d’outre-mer avons une conscience aiguë de la nécessité de recouvrer l’Afrique. Il s’agit là d’une connexion historique que l’on ne doit pas prendre à la légère, l’Afrique peut se sauver grâce à cette idéologie panafricaine. De tous les continents, l’Afrique est souvent apparue comme totalement déconcertée par ses enfants, semés de par le globe. Et pourtant, il est impératif que l’Africain en Colombie, l’Africain au Brésil, l’Africain en Guadeloupe, et l’Africain à la Jamaïque soient inclus dans le projet de l’Afrique. De même que l’européen australien qui vit à des centaines de kilomètres de l’Europe participe au projet culturel européen, l’Africain doit faire partie du projet culturel de l’Afrique, que ce soit à Cuba, ou aux Etats-Unis, à Haïti, ou au Nicaragua, en Martinique, au Mexique ou en Guyane.
