Around 30 members of the Haitian Soccer Federation, the country’s governing body for soccer, were killed during the quake. The stadium normally used by the national team in Port-Au-Prince is currently being used a “tent city,” with displaced victims living on the grounds.
The chance to have a place to practice away from the destruction was invaluable, according to Dr. Yves Jean-Bart, the president of the Haitian Soccer Federation.

“Our soccer players do not want to be daunted by this misfortune and want to come back on the field to be more successful and bring joy and happiness to their fans, but the state of destruction in the country, the occupation of the fields by the homeless forces us to be inactive unless we travel abroad,” said Jean-Bart in a letter to San Antonio Sports Foundation Executive Director Dr. Susan Blackwood.

“We are not alone in our misfortune; thank you for allowing our youth to experience a time far from anxiety in the environment of Haiti.
Your kind gesture will not go in vain.”
