BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (defend.ht) - While visiting dignitaries in Argentina, Senator Jean Charles Moise (Nord/Inite) denounced human rights abuses carried out by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti and said MINUSTAH is not about developing Haiti but a covert occupying force.

The two-time mayor of the town of Milot, where The Citadel sits, said that it had been nine years since the UN peacekeepers entered a nation not at war.

Senator Moise is "leading an international campaign to raise awareness of what is happening in Haiti" he said in an interview with Buenos Aires radio station South Radio FM 88.3.

Moise said that "UN troops were supposedly commanded to help and stabilize Haiti. At first they talked about six months but now we realize that everything has changed," he said, adding "now we realize that it is not to assistance or stabilization mission in Haiti but it is an occupation."

The senator said that the occupation brought more problems than solutions.

The has been an increased in "human rights violations, we had the ahoracamiento of a Haitian in the field, the problem of cholera introduced by Nepalese troops who are part of MINUSTAH."

Also, argued Senator Moise, the presence of foreign forces "hurts us in our dignity as a people" and that "Haiti was the first black nation to break free, in becoming independent in the hemisphere."

Moreover, the parliamentarian explained to the Argentinian people that the reasons for the continuation of this occupation are for economic interests of certain powers.

"According to certain studies conducted recently it has been learned that there are many natural resources: uranium and gold" in the country. "Now the Americans want those resources," said Senator Moise.

So "on the basis of a political conflict in the beginning, troops came in to stabilize the country. Like the U.S., France and Canada at that time could not hold directly because it would generate a revolt, so it was decided to use the Argentinians and Brazilians to occupy Haiti because they are brothers. But deep down we are the Argentinians or Brazilians occupy if we Americans, Canadians and French," Moise remarked.

In this sense the senator highlighted the role of MINUSTAH in terms of social and political control of their country.

"Whenever we have a problem of insecurity in an area and call MINUSTAH, MINUSTAH answers us 'we are not here for that.' But when the Haitian people take to the streets to march against poverty and misery, MINUSTAH is there to suppress" he said.

From his seat as a Senator, along with other parliamentarians, Moise is proposing a project "for an ordered and gradual withdrawal of MINUSTAH." Furthermore, the resolution raises the compensation of victims of cholera and that the UN redirects the funds going to MINUSTAH to strengthen the areas of health and education. Jean Charles Moise summarizes these statements in one sentence: "We have to replace war vehicles with tractors for farmers."

"For all that we ask the withdrawal of MINUSTAH. That is our battle," he said.
