Earlier, I addressed the Mineral Wealth Conference under the theme, "Uganda's Transformation - A new Era in Mining" at Sheraton Hotel.

In 2004 we injected US$24.7 million into air-borne geological survey and mapping of the minerals in Uganda. More minerals were discovered including 200 million tons of iron ore. Other potential mineral targets have been identified and only need investigation through drilling.

Adding value to minerals will ensure more jobs as well as build technical capacity and a strong base for the economy. Therefore, no iron ore will be exported from Uganda. We need the iron ore for our steel industry.
Strong steel is required for the construction of hydro electricity dams, standard gauge railway lines as well as buildings. Adding value to our minerals will certainly reduce costs of construction.

Uganda, being a land locked country, needs a strong railway line for transportation of mineral products and other goods to regional and international markets. We are working with brothers in the region on the standard gauge railway.

We have implemented several interventions to create a conducive investment environment. Uganda enjoys peace, information and data on minerals is available, good roads. We have also embarked on a program for electricity generation that will provide cheap hydro-power to manufacturers. This will not only lower costs of doing business but will also attract more investors to Uganda and boost trade.

Other interventions include legal stability in terms of tenure of mineral rights, and importation of exploration equipment at zero tax.

Mr. Emeka, one of the participants from Nigeria, expressed interest in building a gas pipeline from Kanungu to Hoima. Gas would substitute imported coal required for processing steel from plenty of raw iron-ore deposits available in the region.
