Dominican Republic ‘must double’ its 34 dams

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s 34 dams scattered across the country store water, generate power and control flooding, for which an expert proposes the construction of twice that number.

Julio Peña, head of the dams and canals agency’s (INDRHI) Irrigation Dept. said the current number of dams can safely store no more than 10 percent of the rainwater.

He said of the 34 dams, around 20 have a considerable volume. “There are others although they are not of considerable volume. Ideally the country should have twice the number of dams it now has.”

Quoted by elcaribe.com.do, Peña said same experts affirm that there are 10 dams ready for construction.

Among the most important dams the official listed Sabana Yegua, Sabaneta, Tavera, Valdesia, Rincon, all of which are used for irrigation, aqueducts, power generation and flood control.

Santo Domingo.- Vicini group executive Juan B. Vicini on Monday said potential areas to invest have been identified along the border with Haiti and forecasts around US$3.0 billion to develop projects.

He said renewable energy and agribusiness projects can be developed in several strategic points which he affirms can transform the border and include Manzanillo port in Montecristi province, Lake Azuey and the Artibonite river basin.  

Vicini said an agro project and an energy storage system could be developed on the river basin and next to the lake.

The sugar cane mogul noted that the port doesn’t require a large investment and stressed that it’s the closest point to the US Eastern Seaboard, with a high return on investment. "What we’re trying to create is a development boom on that area so it becomes an attractive spot for the population."

Interviewed on Sol de la Mañana radio program, the business leader said the viable projects will be announced here and in Haiti through universities and other organizations to engage stakeholders. He said they’ll also integrate the community in the areas where the initiatives will have an impact, with a guaranteed. "to give participation.”

Vicini said developing the border area is the ideal way for Dominican Republic to contribute to solve Haiti’s economic and social crisis, by creating jobs and attracting investment, in addition to the benefits for both nations. Santo Domingo.- Vicini Group CEO Juan Vicini on Tuesday proposed dividing the power grid into two systems: profitable and unprofitable, to establish a real (not subsidized) rate for circuits that can afford it, to spur private investment in the sector, and warned that Dominican Republic must invest in Haiti “to avert entering a catastrophe."

"People who can pay the energy shouldn’t have a subsidy," the mogul said.

Vicini said a mechanism can be established for unprofitable circuits to guarantee their inclusion in the service, such as installing solar panels to supply a particular demand and provide their surplus to the system.

Speaking in the American Chamber of Commerce seminar "Electricity sector: problems, challenges and opportunities at the gates of a grand pact," the business leader warned of the imminent increase in energy demand in Haiti and Dominican Republic, from a young population with high growth prospects.

In his dissertation “Energy market projection: supplied demand vs. satisfied demographics," Vicini said that’s reason the public and private sectors should establish strategies to deal with increased demand for public services and jobs. “If the foundations to deal with the situation that lies ahead aren’t created, the country cannot respond to the new reality.”

He justified Vicini Group’s considerable investments in the energy sector, despite that the country doesn’t have a shortage in supply.

Vicini also justified his business vision that includes Haiti, noting the neighboring country’s unfavorable conditions that he affirms spurs immigration to the Dominican Republic. "We must establish the minimum amount of investment to avert entering a catastrophe."
