Racism is born of ignorance; knowledge is the antidote

Last week I wrote about racism and left so much unsaid.

I had just begun reading a new book,
An unbroken agony: Haiti, from revolution to the kidnapping of a president, by Randall Robinson.

For a long time, I've brooded over the disparity of United States policy toward Haitians and its policy toward its Caribbean neighbor, Cuba.

I hoped it wasn't racism that caused the U.S. to offer succor to Cubans and send Haitians back.

One night last December I caught part of an interview Charlie Rose had with author Robinson about his book. I haven't been able to put it down since I got it.

I remembered how puzzled I was back in 2004 when the charismatic former priest, Jean Bertrand Aristide, was reported to have "voluntarily left" Haiti after serving only four years as president.

It was his second term as president. He was elected the first time in 1990 with 67 percent of the vote. Seven months later he was ousted in a coup and exiled.

Many Americans probably remember that Bill Clinton encouraged a U.N. occupation that ended up with Aristide being restored to power.

How many of us know, though, that the powers-that-be in the U.S. were motivated to help Aristide not for altruistic reasons, but because they were afraid of Florida's shores being inundated by boatloads of poor Haitians?

It was confusing to believe that Aristide simply went into voluntary exile with his American-born wife.

Prior to this abrupt departure, news stories out of Haiti praised Aristide for the programs he instituted to help narrow the enormous gap between the rich -- who were mostly light-skinned urbanites -- and the poor, who were overwhelmingly rural and dark-skinned.

To read that Colin Powell was instrumental in engineering a coup in Haiti, left me feeling embarrassed that someone I respected could do this.

As I usually encourage readers to do, I started an Internet search for more information. I found Robinson's story corroborated by the BBC-Online and CNN, among many sources.
(Former U.S. Representative) Ron Dellums, who worked as a lobbyist for Aristide's government, got a call from (Powell) warning in no uncertain terms that gunmen were coming to kill Aristide on Sunday morning.

The U.S., said Powell, would not lift a finger to stop them. When the Americans come to call, Aristide must leave with them, reported the Black Commentator Online.

Dellums refused to talk to Robinson about Powell's message.

Get this book. Read how Robinson and U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters accompanied the Aristides to their terrifying destination in Africa.

Ask yourself the questions raised by his story.

If you are sincere with yourself, and in search of the true, you need to dig very deep to find bones in okra, and believe me you will find them, and a lot of bones.

Instead of crying racism, start with the Clintons, Mr. and Mrs. Robinson, congress woman Maxine Waters, former congressman Ron Dellums, and other members of the Black Caucus. They all received some kind of favor for their service.

When Aristide was ousted the second time, the majority of supposedly friends did not come to his rescue. When I contacted them about what are they going to do this time, they said that the first situation was clearly a military coup d’etat, and it was the right thing to do, to support President Aristide and the Haitian people.

The second time was not to clear and they did not have enough evidence to support Aristide’s case the second time around. Some of them said that it looks like a deal that went bad”.

It took Aristide 3 years to come back the first time. Now his former Prime Minister and good friend Rene Preval is in power and more than 4 years are under the bridge.

One would think that things would be easier for him this time but……..

We urge you to use your influence to expedite the cancellation of Haiti's debts to the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and other multilateral financial institutions and to urge an immediate suspension of all further debt service payments from Haiti to these institutions.
