The following Security Council press statement on Haiti was read out today by Council President Dumisani S. Kumalo ( South Africa):
The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the murder of the Nigerian police officer of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), which occurred on 12 April 2008 in Port-au-Prince. They extended their condolences to the family of the fallen officer and to the Government of Nigeria.
The members of the Security Council urged the Government of Haiti to take all necessary measures to identify and bring to justice the perpetrators of this attack, and declared their strong support for the investigation that has been launched by the Haitian National Police, in coordination with MINUSTAH.
The members of the Security Council reiterated their condemnation of the recent violence in Port-au-Prince and other cities, and once again expressed their deep regret about the loss of lives and injuries. They stressed the need to maintain public order.
The members of the Security Council reiterated their concern regarding the humanitarian situation and urged the international donors to provide emergency relief as a priority.
The members of the Security Council reiterated their support for MINUSTAH, commended the dedication of its personnel and expressed their appreciation for those countries which contribute troops and police to the Mission.
