Haiti, Djibouti and Liberia will become the first beneficiaries of a 1.2-billion-dollar program launched by the World Bank to provide emergency aid to countries suffering from global food shortages and surging prices, as grants totaling 25 million dollars were approved Thursday.
Another 10 countries have made requests for grants, to be distributed to the poorest countries most hampered by the high cost of food, according to World Bank President Robert Zoellick.
The remaining $1 billion will be divided up through a mixture of grants and loans in a streamlined process that doesn't require a majority of votes in the bank's board of member countries, Zoellick said.
In a statement issued in Washington, Zoellick said "these initiatives will help address the immediate danger of hunger and malnutrition for the two billion people struggling to survive in the face of rising food prices."
He also said that the World Bank will increase its overall support for agriculture and food aid to deal with immediate and long-term food problems, to $6 billion next year, marking an increase of $2 billion.
The World Bank President pledged to push for a clear action plan at a UN meeting to be held in Rome from June 3-5 to tackle the food crisis and provide poor countries with immediate support.
