PEP urges Caricom to help Haiti
Published on: 9/11/08.

GOVERNMENT is being asked to mobilise relief supplies for Haiti as a "matter of urgency".

Leader of the People's Empowerment Party (PEP) David Comissiong said Barbados and CARICOM were duty-bound to respond to this "terrible humanitarian crisis" by making an effort to send food, medical and other forms of aid.

This call comes against the background of the devastation caused that improverished country by four hurricanes this season – Fay, Gustav, Hanna and the most recent, Ike.

In addition to the over 300 deaths, casualties and damage to homes, other infrastructure, including the "rice bowl", which was Haiti's key production area, was reportedly devastated.

"Clearly, in light of our relatively small size, we will not be able to respond at the same level as the United Nations or oil-rich Venezuela, but we can and must make an effort to give as much as we can," said the release.

"We in Barbados are fortunate that year after year we are spared the hurricane-based destruction that so many of our fellow Caribbean states have to contend with. And we must therefore recognise that this "good fortune" places upon us an additional responsibility to help those less fortunate territories," it added.

The PEP is also urging CARICOM heads to use their meeting here this week to "discuss and agree upon a collective CARICOM response to the hurricane-based humanitarian crisis in Haiti". (PR/YB)

It is difficult for each country in the carribean to have a task force that can respond adequately to these hurricanes that kill so many people. However, by consolidating their resources they can do a better job to alieviate the sufferings of our brothers and sisters.By conbinning our resources to respond to similar situation we can create a task force to deal with these tragedies .Therefore, The caricom heads of state should prepare a conference to deal with these problems. It is not the fist time we confront these problems, and it will not be the last time.In unity there is strenght.
