Commissioner Announces $10 Million Donation To Haiti

MIAMI -- Commissioner Dorrin D. Rolle held a press conference Monday at his district office to discuss efforts to bring humanitarian aid to Haiti.
Rolle said he worked hand in hand with Artists Village, Inc., a non-profit organization, to oversee the distribution of $10 million worth of antibiotics to go to Haitians in need of medical treatment after four devastating storms destroyed several villages on the island.

Rolle said the antibiotics are enough to serve over 200,000 Haitians.
“This request was a long time effort from Artist Village consultants, and as we speak the two containers have already been delivered to Haiti and are in the hands of the Department of Health, which will work towards even distribution,” Rolle said.

The commissioner also announced the total amount of food, clothing and monetary donations collected at his Help For Haiti Relief Concert and plan to ship and distribute the materials to Haiti.

Ronide Cayo, founder of Artists Village, said the help is much needed in Haiti.
“As you know, people are still living in swamp,” Cayo said. “A lot of those diseases are resulting from those hurricanes. Artist Village does not wait until there is a cyclone or hurricane to knock on doors.”

Cayo said the organization started to work with a consultant in the health industry and with a pharmaceutical company.

The organization credits the Haitian Chamber of Commerce in Florida, who paid for the transportation fees, the Haitian Government and Haitian officials.
