Ex Dominican ambassador in Haiti lauds Clinton’s twin plant proposal

SANTO DOMINGO.- Former Dominican ambassador in Haiti Jose Serrulle said Monday he supports U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s proposal to create twin companies between Dominican Republic and Haiti. “Everything that’s done to bolster links for trade, industry, farming, agro-forestry, to protect the environment, the health of both nations which share this island of Hispaniola is highly positive.”

He said the measure would make it possible for both nations to play a more dynamic role in terms of their integration at the world and the Caribbean levels.
Serrulle said it’s time that both nations draw plans aimed at continuing with the war against the traffic of drugs, weapons and of people, stressing that although they are different States, “it doesn’t imply that they cannot work together.”

Interviewed in program “Uno + Uno”, the former diplomat said that to see Dominican and Haitians companies working together in the constructions such as highways, bridges and roads would have an extraordinary value, because these would benefit from the work of technicians and engineers from both countries.

As to the problem Haitian immigrants, he said the country has been unjustly criticized, noting that the Dominican nation that has most collaborated with their cause, adding that the Haitians who reside in Dominican territory have dignified work and pay. “We’re the country that has collaborated most with Haiti in real terms, first because we receive its work force and we’re already paying them fair salaries in relation to what Dominicans make.”

The ex Dominican ambassador in Haiti said he’s optimistic with the Haitian development process, because in his view it’s a nation that’s entering its best stage during the last 20 years.

No matter what people will say I think Ambassador Jose Serullo was the most effective dominican ambassador in haiti. He has a great vision of progress for both countries. He understands the dynamics of the relations between the two countries.

I hope that President Leonel Fernandez will listen to Ambassador Serullo whenever there is a problem in the relations of the two countries which ,in spite of the cultural and economical differences ,must cooperate for the well being of their citizens .If the Germans and the French can belong to the European Union there is no reason that haitians and dominicans can not live on the island in peace and harmony.

Haitians must work harder and improve the quality of life of their brothers and sisters in order for them to be respected in the Dominican republic. We have to give our peasants the means they need in order for them to stay home and work to improve our agricultural sector. Why must a peasant go to the Dominican Republic to work in the bateys when we have so much need for food in haiti?

At the time when the Duvalier Government was selling these peasants to the dominicans the United States was reducing our sugar quota because we were unable to fulfill it.Why instead of sending them to the Dominican republic the government did not make an agricultural reform so that they can work in the fields to produce more rice, legumes, fruits, coffee, cocoa , coton etc?

If today a dominican has the audacity to criticize haitians in the "Le nouvellliste "forum we must admit we're responsible for the deterioration of our country.Instead of allocating our resources to produce more goods and services for our people we prefer to live like welfare recipients waiting for the cheks of the IMF, BID and World bank.Instead of living according to our means we prefer to ask for charity from the international community. How then can we expect people to respect us?
