Un Championnat de la Caraibe au soccer dès l'an prochain !
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP)—A new Caribbean league involving clubs across the region will be launched next year, the Puerto Rico football federation said on Friday.
Clubs from Trinidad, Jamaica, St. Kitts, Haiti, Bermuda, Antigua, Guyana, Dominica and others will participate, though it is too early to say what the format will look like or how many games will be played each year.
Joe Serralta, president of Puerto Rico’s Football Federation, said he has been pushing for the league’s creation since 2004.
“With a population of more than 40 million people, this Caribbean league can and should be developed as one of the most important of the CONCACAF,” Serralta said.
Caribbean officials needed the United Soccer Leagues—the largest organization of elite-level soccer in North America, but which also oversees leagues in Canada and the Caribbean—to agree to the creation of the new competition.
The agreement between the USL and the Puerto Rico Soccer League will give the island’s eight club teams—plus the USL-level Puerto Rico Islanders—an opportunity for more games and exposure.
