For Sands, A Trip to Haiti is a Trip Home

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Professional boxer Al Sands has always gone by the nickname 'The Haitian Temptation,' but now with a planned mission trip to his native country, he plans to make it more of a lifestyle.
"I've built this athletic physique, if you will, so why not use it to go and build my home country?" Sands said. "I'll be doing work there like building sustainable structures, building gardens, dig wells, and whatever I need to do to help and really learn my culture."

The trip, though, won't come without professional consequences for Sands.
He is currently the NABA and Minnesota State cruiserweight champion, but because of the timing of his trip he will be stripped of at least that national title before he's back.
"What are you willing sacrifice to get what you want? I've wanted to go back to Haiti so bad that unfortunately I'm sure I'll have to vacate one of the belts," he said. "But in order to move forward I really need to know where I come from if I'm going to know where I'm going."
That knowledge has always been tough to come by for Sands. He was adopted out of Haiti at only 18 months old and has never met his birth mother.
This trip, he says, is at least in part to help him consider the road not taken.
"What kind of life would I live had I not been adopted?" he wondered. "I want to take in my culture, take in the lifestyle, and take in the atmosphere that is Haiti."
Sands is currently raising money to help with his trip to Haiti, and he is currently more than halfway to his goal of $2,000. If you are interested in helping, click here to donate.
