U.S. adoptions of Haitian kids face stumbling blocks

The adoption of Haitian children by American families is facing increased scrutiny by Haiti's government, the State Department said Tuesday.

The news comes as the U.N. children's agency, UNICEF, opened a special tent camp Tuesday for children separated from their parents in the earthquake.

For several days after the magnitude-7.0 quake Jan. 12, orphans already matched with adoptive parents were being sped out of Haiti without completion of the usual adoption paperwork.

Haiti has altered that policy. The government now says it must approve every orphan's departure, including those granted "humanitarian parole" by the U.S. government to expedite their visas, the State Department said
